PROVISIONALLY IT IS JAMIESON
The opening round of the 2009 Australian Saloon Car Championship series remains provisional after Holden Commodore driver Shawn Jamieson from South Australia led both races from lights out to flag fall. In doing so he recorded his first ever round one win but had to work hard for his laurels as he was pushed all the way by the Ford Falcons of West Australian Clint Harvey and defending champion Steve Kwiatkowski (SA).
In the first 10 lap race, the gap between Jamieson and second placed Harvey ebbed between a couple of cars lengths and nothing continually while Queenslander Kris Walton (Falcon) survived a brush with the concrete to retain third at the end of the opening lap, ahead of John Goodacre (Commodore), Rod Dawson (Qld), Peter Dane (NSW), Kwiatkowski (all in Falcons), Victorian Simon Tabinor (Commodore) and the Fords of Brett Niall, Bruce Heinrich and Troy Hoey.
Walton lost of fifth gear and his power steering on the second lap, and was soon being displaced by those immediately on his tail, ultimately dropping his newly constructed Ford to seventh. Goodacre (SA) moved to third but was passed by the charging Kwiatkowski on the final lap, having started tenth after a practice crash. Dane and Tabinor finished fifth and sixth while Heinrich’s return to Ford after a year in a Holden earned him eighth – he was slowed be a broken exhaust.
The South Australian and former champ on five occasions used Walton’s Ford from last year and headed home the third Falcon in the team, that of Hoey which also had power steering issues. The West Australian son and father team of Brett and Malcolm Niall were the next two across the line in front of Sam Milton’s Ford, NSW’s Brian French in a Holden and Dawson who suffered tyre dramas in the latter stages.
The race was shortened to eight laps due to time restraints and a Safety Car session after Dave Heath suffered a puncture in his Ford, Matt Lovell glanced the wall at the Griffin Bend in his Falcon, and the Ryan Dane Falcon went off at the Chase.Kwiatkowski continued his charge in the second race, swapping places with Harvey and then challenging Jamieson. He looked set to steal the win when emerging from the Chase on the last occasion and getting alongside (on the inside) in the run the last corner. But Jamieson stuck to his guns on the outside and unfancied line and prevailed to the flag where he held on by half a car length.
Behind Harvey, Goodacre held fourth until power steering failure ruled him out on lap four. Tabinor had a lap or so just off the podium but pitted with a mechanical ailment and that brought Walton and Heinrich into the top five with Peter Dane up to sixth with Brett Niall next.
Next was Dawson from Milton in tenth. French was next in front of Hoey, the Commodore of WA’s Dion Panizza who started twenty first and Tony Shanks’ Falcon.
Two Falcons were excluded from race two due to engine head mix-ups while final placings and points will be advised.
