Great opening day at Temora
Rnd#2 2009 Continental Tyres Australian Superboat Championships
Lake Centenary, Temora, NSW
27 March, 2009
The opening day of the second round of the Continental Tyres Australian Superboat Championships provided a continuation of the kind of action and excitement that was provided at Melton just three weeks ago.
Another strong field of boats arrived to see the Temora track in pristine condition after countless man hours were put into the venue by new promoters Phil and Louise Dixon. The weather too was perfect with fine and sunny conditions greeting drivers as they lined up for the opening day of competition. Just two qualifying runs were scheduled for the day, and there was no shortage of action across all classes.
As was expected, Phil Dixon renewed his challenge on the points leaders with an outstanding 45.064 early in the second session before both Daryl Hutton and Mick Carroll bumped him back to third, Carroll’s stunning 43.073 an exceptional and inspiring benchmark for the field to chase heading into Sunday’s action. Sadly for Carroll’s team-mate and the man who dominated Melton’s opening round, Tony Giustozzi, he suffered from the testing track layout. He wasn’t alone with more than half the field at one point failing to travel in the right direction.
For Nathan Pretty and Slade Stanley in Group A though there were no such problems as they continued their rivalry, Pretty this time getting the better of his foe with a best of 44.534, the second fastest time of the day, outright!
350’s too saw a continuation of the Melton stoush between father and son Mark and Jake Garlick, Jake again getting the better of the ‘old man’ but the margin was only a tenth of a second. The interest today was in the debut of the new Stingray of birthday boy Brooke Lucas, the reigning 350 Class champion though struggling with niggling issues which kept him behind the pace for the majority of the day; expect him to improve tomorrow.
With fine weather and temperatures in the low 30s expected tomorrow we’re sure to see the action ‘heat’ up as drivers look to accumulate more valuable series points heading into the mid point of the season at Griffith in just two weeks time.
