“I don’t know what’s happening this weekend, I just can’t seem to get into a rhythm – this is the worst I’ve driven in years,” a confused Rohan Smith admitted during the opening day of qualifying for the second round of the 2009 Continental Tyres Australian Championships at Temora last weekend.

“It’s not the boat, the boat’s fine – it’s just me, I’m rushing things, I know all I need to do is relax, so I’ll have an easy night tonight and see how we start tomorrow..”

Fortunately for Smith, day two provided a completely different scenario, the 2002 400 Class champion finding himself heading into the final as the fastest driver..

“That just goes to show doesn’t it,” a bewildered Smith laughed post top-ten. “You just concentrate on what you’re doing and do it to the best of your ability and hopefully everything else will fall into place..”

Smith was third out in the top three having witnessed both Tremayne Jukes (45.678) and Brooke Dixon (45.056) run before him..

His start was sharp and to the first split he was up by a tenth of a second, but coming through the top of the circuit across the wash the boat became unsettled, the second spilt revealing a four tenth loss in pace. To the line though he picked up two tenths, crossing the line with a best for the weekend of 45.146.. It was quick, but sadly not quick enough.

“At the end of the day that’s a good solid result,” Rohan agreed. “It’s more valuable points (BTS Racing recorded third overall for the event behind Slade Stanley and Nathan Pretty), and whilst we were a little off in the final, it was up to Brooke to win and she did that, so full points to her on her drive.”

Whilst carding third overall for the weekend, Rohan has also moved to fourth in the points race, just a single point off the top three. “We’re not done yet, not by a long shot. The boat is more than capable of running with the top two, it’s just fractions of seconds now we need to find and we’ll be there. I’m really looking forward to Griffith because I think we could surprise a few people there..!”

The BTS Racing team now prepares for the third round of the 2009 Continental Tyres Australian Superboat Championships scheduled for Griffith in central-western NSW over the Easter weekend (April 10-11).
