GREAT START FOR MOSTERT
30 May, 2009
Hard work and determination has finally paid off for young Queenslander Chaz Mostert at Symmons Plains Raceway this morning, topping the timesheets for qualifying in round three of the Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship.
Mostert, driving a Spectrum 011b, out-paced his rivals with an impressive 55.56sec lap of the 2.41km circuit, snaring pole position ahead of No Fear racer Nick Percat and Parramatta Smash Repairs pilot Ryan Simpson.
“Well I’m pretty happy with that!” Mostert beamed.
“It’s good to carry over the pace we had at Winton ... (it) just shows we’re on the right track as far as our set up goes ... and if the rest of the weekend pans out as planned, we should hopefully bag some more points,” he added.
Nick Percat has dominated qualifying for the first two rounds of this season, and for the first time will be starting race one from second place on the grid.
“It’s going to be a cracker race!” Percat said.
“There’s less than a second splitting the top ten which you don’t see at many tracks ... it’s pretty hard to pull away and run your own race here because it’s such a short circuit - so you can be sure there’ll be plenty of push and shove,” he said.
Synergy Motorsport’s Ryan Simpson also breathes some fresh air into the front of the grid, posting an impressive 55.63sec, just a tenth off Mostert’s pole lap.
“I was pretty much running my own session out there today,” the New South Welshman said.
“If you’re lucky and can hook a tow, you can run some pretty good times around here ... the best thing is my times this morning were pretty much unaided so I can go into this first race pretty confident we’ve got real pace,” Simpson said.
