Atkinson/Block to WRC in 2010
15 October, 2009
Autosport (UK) are reporting that US rally sensation Ken Block, the man responsible for arguably the greatest motorsport YouTube videos ever produced will star in a two-car satellite Ford WRC team in 2010 for the first of a three year program. The man rumoured to be joining him.. Not Freetsyle Motocross 'legend' Travis Pastrana, Block's Subaru USA rally team-mate (a man who by the way is sneaking into Australia in just over a week to promote his new Nitro Circus show set for launch in Australia next year), but former Subaru factory star, Australian Chris Atkinson.
The story is only in its formative stages, but it suggests that the new Monster Energy (a current supporter of Block) supported two-car team will debut in early 2010 with a pair of '09 spec Focus WRC cars for at least half the 2010 rounds, with a view to contesting full seasons in 2011 and 2012.
Block has never made a secret of his desire to compete in the World Rally Championship against the best drivers in the world and relished opportunities to compete against the likes of former world champion Colin Mcrae in X-Games competition prior to the Scot's untimely passing.
For WRC it is a perfect way to attract interest from the biggest commercial market in the world, whilst for Monster, Atkinson's involvement is timely as the Energy Drink giant plans a full-scale launch into Australia next year. Part of that launch, includes another Australian, with the rumoured adoption of dual AMA SX champion and newly crowned US AMA MX #1, Chad Reed. Reed looks set to switch from Rockstar Makita Suzuki to Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki for both the pending Australian SuperX series, and the AMA SX and MX seasons.
