Third gear dilemma for Clios
Ian Thorp’s R-Sport team has endured a tough weekend with a niggling third gear issue with the Clio 197s. “They don’t race with the standard production box in Europe,” he shrugged post-qualifying. Richard [Gartner] broke third gear last week, and we did the same during qualifying. We’re swapping to a replacement box tonight and we’ll see what happens tomorrow. We also suffered with a sticking brake pedal which was a little intermittent, but we’ve fixed that.
“At the end of the day we’re doing something new with Renault and it’s a long term project, so there’s bound to be niggling little issues in our first event. We also got caught with homologation. Somewhere they discovered the cars weight should be 1280kg, yet the manual and the websites say 1160, so we’re trying to load back in as much weight as possible – that’ll be something we’ll look to address after this weekend.”
