Older Lancers still on the pace
Two Evolution IX model Mitsubishi Lancers will start from the second row of the grid in the Dial Before You Dig Australian Six Hour, with the David Wall/Des Wall/Trevor Symonds East Holiday Parks entry edging out the Tony Quinn/Klark Quinn VIP Petfoods machine in qualifying.

Both teams suffered ill-fated Bathurst 12 Hour campaigns in February - with the former disqualified for a tyre irregularity, and the latter retiring early due to a brake-failure induced crash - but believe they are shaping up well for the Six Hour this weekend.

“We’re happy with where we are at the moment,” said Des Wall.

“We have to run less boost than the Evo Xs, as well as having a narrower track and smaller wheels and tyres. But our car is still quick and reliability is going to be very important in the race.

“The right front tyre life will be crucial. We’ll definitely be changing that in the race – perhaps going for the right side only and leaving the left side alone.”

While Tony Quinn qualified the VIP Lancer, son Klark has done little racing of late, and says it’s taking him some time to get up to speed.

“I’m a little rusty,” said Klark.

“Dad has been pretty much on the pace straight away this weekend, and it’s taken me some time to get into it.

“I spend so much time focussed on pet food these days that I haven’t had time to think about racing, and I haven’t been to Eastern Creek for about five years, which doesn’t help.

“There was a lot of damage to fix after Bathurst, but the car has run well so far. We’re just planning to run around, keep it on the lead lap, and see where we end up.

“At this stage it looks like we might change the right front tyre at every stop, but you have to be flexible in these races and see how they pan out.”
