McFadden again!
James McFadden accounted for a classy field of 42 entrants at Adelaide’s Speedway City in winning the fourth round of the Hi-Tec Oils World Series Sprintcars Championship - it’s his third win in four rounds held so far.
“Glen Beaton (his crew chief) had the car set up perfectly tonight,” grinned the very happy winner, “it seemed like it didn’t matter where I put the car I could go quickly. I think I did about ten laps without lifting off the gas pedal. It was a dream to run this car tonight.”
The Queensland based Northern Territorian (Alice Springs) 21 year old sped his Totally Workwear #25 COOL Chassis to a strong win in the 35 lap Speedweek opener, relieving early leader Jason Johnson of the #1 position.
“I screwed up in traffic,” lamented Johnson, “you can’t afford to give any of these guys an inch and unfortunately I coughed up the lead at a critical moment and spent the rest of the race playing catch up.”
Johnson’s #47 Haynes Mechanical Maxim was fast all night, and began the A-Main from the front row alongside Vortex Gold Shootout winner David Murcott.
The American shot to an early lead and within half race distance the battle for second had extended to a five-car conflict between David Murcott, Robbie Farr, Steven Lines and Brooke Tatnell.
Lines powered his Monster Energy / Monster Energy #7 J&J to his second consecutive runner-up position in a WSS A-Main, following up on his result at Mildura for Round Three.
“Full credit to James (McFadden), he was fast and he did a good job. They put themselves in a position to win this race and we came up just a little short. It was a really enjoyable race; there were lapped cars everywhere and about four or five of us battling for position. It’s night like this you love racing Sprintcars.”
Jason Johnson finished right on Lines’ tail in the battle for second with the very consistent Robbie Farr fourth in the East Coast Pipeline #7 Maxim.
“Considering we were in no man’s land with qualifying, tonight’s not a bad result. It really could have gone either way coming into our second heat tonight but fortunately we were able to scrape into the Shootout and at least get a decent shot at a decent feature result,” Farr admitted.
Fifth car home was WSS Grand Marshall and Australian Sprintcar Champion Brooke Tatnell who had an up and down night in the Toyota Genuine Parts #1 COOL.
Tatnell set quick time in Revolution Racegear qualifying and looked set to rack up high points coming into the Shootout but an incident in his second heat where he made contact with a half spun Glen Saville saw the #1 COOL flip down the back straight.
The team thrashed to repair the car in time for the Shootout but the eight times WSS Champion wound up qualifying 6th for the A-Main – two spots back from the 4th place situation when he entered the event.
Tatnell would be the first one to admit, he really didn’t make the impact he was hoping for in the A-Main.
David Murcott put the #83 Mainline Dynolog Dynamometer Eagle Chassis on pole with a blitzing 12.280s lap in the Gold Shootout - as so often he has over the last season and a half.
The Victorian hard charger was involved in a major incident earlier in the night which saw South Aussie youngster Luke Bowey take a wild ride and Murcott also join the upside down club.
The crew returned the hastily repaired car to the track to finish the event but they wound up changing a motor prior to the Shootout - it was a busy night for the 2010/2011 Series runner-up.
He challenged several times for the lead but faded back to 6th by the fall of the chequers.
Coming in behind Murcott was the ever consistent Luke Dillon in the Hogs Breath Café #81 Eagle over fellow Adelaidians Matt Egel (Universal Forklifts #29 QT Chassis) who won the “Hard Charger” award for his rapid advancements, Ryan Jones (Murray Machining & Sheds XXX) and Trevor Green in the Natrad #4 Maxim rounding out the top ten.
Eleventh was a good result to salvage for Ian Madsen in the Australia Wide Towing #11 (he had a damaged front wing in qualifying that hurt his time trial performance) ahead of 12th place Dylan Jenkin (this result probably doesn’t accurately describe his consistency) Max Dumesny in 13th (Valvoline / GKR Transport Maxim) Daniel Pestka in 14th, Brad Keller (#19 Fatchen) in 15th and rounding out the finishers Sydneysider Glen Saville.
Recording a DNF against their names were Ricky Maiolo, Jamie Cobby, Garry Brazier and Warrenne Ekins.
Round Five of the Series (and Round Two of Speedweek) will be conducted at Murray Machining & Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway Tuesday night, December 27.
