Crambrook extends series lead with win at Bathurst
Mount Panorama, Bathurst – October 12, 2008
Series leader Layton Crambrook has extended his points lead in the 2008 V8 Ute Series heading into the final round at Oran Park in early December.
The Ford driver passed title rival Kim Jane for the lead at the completion of the opening lap of today’s third race, ensuring yet another round victory.
Jane kept Crambrook honest for the remainder of the race, setting the fastest lap on the final tour, trailing Crambrook by just over a second at the flag.
The battle of the race involved Garry MacDonald, who was passed by Ryal Harris, Jack Elsegood, Grant Johnson, and Clint Harvey in quick succession.
Whilst MacDonald was able to pass Harvey back later in the race, Harris was the real mover. Having earlier passed Gary Baxter at Forrest’s Elbow, the young Queenslander pulled a brave move on fellow Global Trader sponsored driver Kurt Wimmer on the final lap to take third.
Following his win in race two, Wimmer ensured a career best round result with a solid drive today, crossing the line fifth, giving him a podium spot for the weekend.
Hard luck stories weren’t hard to come by, with Andrew Fisher, George Miedecke, and Nandi Kiss all heading for the pits during the race to retire.
Spins book-ended the race, with Ben Kavich losing control at the exit of the Chase on the opening lap, and Brad Patton having a race ending off on the final tour.
Yanis Derums was also a last lap casualty, having been involved in a bumping match with George Elliot, which ended with the Kanga Holden heading nose-first into the concrete wall at the start of Mountain Straight.
An exciting weekend of Ute racing was rounded out with a great move by Jack Elsegood on 2007 Series winner Grant Johnson on the final corner for sixth place.
With Crambrook bringing an extended points lead to his ‘home ground’ at Oran Park, he’ll start as firm favourite to clinch his first V8 Ute crown in his Mother Energy Drink Falcon.
