[F1] Webber makes Autosport's top ten

Webber makes Autosport's top ten

In a week where he ended up in hospital with a double fracture of his right leg after a nasty accident in his own Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge, the Australian Formula One driver has been given a boost by one of motor racing’s most influential magazines.

Webber, 32, was named at number six in UK motor racing magazine Autosport’s Top 10 of F1 drivers for the 2008 season, which Webber ended in 11th place overall with 21 World Championship points.

Autosport is the world’s best-known motor racing journal of record, while its Grand Prix editor Mark Hughes, the man who named the year’s top 10, is widely regarded as one of the most astute and candid of F1 observers.

Commenting on Webber’s career, Hughes wrote: “He’s been quick in every F1 car he’s ever driven; he’s still trying to shed a reputation for not being as strong a racer as a qualifier. This year he again refuted that reputation with his performances. In the first half of ’08, a Red Bull was capable of lower-end points – and Webber scored them with terrific, if overlooked, drives.

”Since entering F1 in 2002 with a brilliant fifth place for Minardi in Melbourne on debut, Webber has also figured three times in the top 10 as nominated by the annual publication Autocourse, a collector’s item among motor racing enthusiasts the world over, and is tipped to do so again this year. Drew Ward, CEO of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, is certain that Webber will be recovered from his injury in time for the season opening race in Melbourne from 26 – 29 March.

“I am very confident that he will be on the grid,” said Mr Ward.“Mark is a very fit guy. He has undergone surgery to fix the break in his leg and I know that immediately after he leaves hospital he will be straight into his rehabilitation. I think it’s very unlikely there will be much time missed out of his Formula One testing schedule and I expect him to be completely recovered in time for Melbourne in March.”
